CAK in collaboration with various partners has engaged several projects aimed at assisting members of the cooperative movement. These include:
Support to Farmer Organizations in Africa Programme (SFOAP)
The project was in collaboration with the Eastern Africa Farmers Federation (EAFF) and was financed by the EU, IFAD, Swiss Development Agency (SDC) & French Development Agency (afd). It sought to improve the livelihoods and food security situation of African smallholder farmers and rural producers. The focus was to help Farmer Organizations (FOs) evolve into stable performing, accountable organizations able to effectively represent their members and advice farmers in their farming enterprises.
The aim was to improve the performance of small-scale farmers, as a result of improved access to relevant economic services, strengthen the capacity of farmer organizations at all levels, provide appropriate economic services to their members and address policy-related challenges affecting the performance of farmer organizations in the dairy value chain.
Two societies Borabu Dairy Farmers Cooperative Union (DFCU) and Kirinyaga Dairy Cooperative Society Ltd benefitted.
The project resulted into increased incomes resulting from an increase in yield per cow and increased economic support services. Farmers are now practicing improved dairy cow management through better feeding practices.
