CAK Governance Structure
The General Assembly
The General Assembly is the highest authority of the Cooperative Alliance of Kenya. The assembly refers to a meeting of the delegates elected in accordance with the Alliance by-laws. The assembly comprises of 255 members. Other than Nairobi County which elects 25 members, all the other 46 counties elect 5 members each to the assembly. For one to be elected as a delegate, he must be a serving member of the Management Committee or Board of Directors of a Co-operative Society within the County. Each delegate serves for a term of three years and may be re-elected once the term is over.
The Governing Council
The Governing Council is the governing authority of the Alliance and consists of 17 members. Of the 17, eight represent the eight administrative regions, Four represent the National Cooperative Organizations (NACOs), one represents the countrywide Saccos, and
two members co-opted by the governing council. The Commissioner for Cooperatives, or his representative, is also a member of the council. The Executive Director of CAK serves as the secretary to the council.
The Technical Committee
The Technical Committee comprises of NACO’s Chief Executive Officers serves as the and ‘Think Tank’ to the CAK National Governing Council. The committee offers counsel and technical knowledge to the governing council.
Executive Officers
The executive officers of the Alliance are the Chairman, the Vice-Chairman, and the Executive Director. Both the chairman and the vice chairman are elected from among the National Cooperative Organizations. The Executive Director is appointed by the Council and is the Chief Executive Officer of the alliance.
